The Double

Part One

This section introduces the concept of “the Double”. We will look at five things here. After reading this you will have a foundation concerning “the double” and then we will move into the other areas it affects.

 

1.         Restoring Double

Exodus 22: 2-4; 7-9    If a thief be found; If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double. 

7If a man shall deliver unto his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man’s house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. 8If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbor’s goods. 9For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challenges to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbor. 

 

Revelation 18:4-6     And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you… in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. 

 

Satan is “the thief”! Catch him! Break through the “gates of hell” if you have too but reclaim what he has stolen from you and demand “Double”! 

 

2.         Double Trouble

Isaiah 40:1-2              Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.

 

Now, look at this though… when we seem to be paying “double” for our sins how are we going to react? The reasons for consequences are to bring us back to God. If we refuse to repent and accept responsibility for our actions then we will become bitter and walk away from God. But, if we take responsibility and repent then the Lord will bring us through our troubles and we will enter into a better place. Look at this:

 

3.         Double Blessings

Isaiah 61:7    

For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

 

Zechariah 9:12          Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee;

 

Job 42:12        And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave  Job double what he had before.

4.         Blessed for Serving the Lord

1 Timothy 5:17         Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine

Here’s a “double portion” blessing just for those faithfully serving the Lord!

 

5.         Sowing and Reaping Double!

Genesis 26:    1-3; 12-14                    And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee.

 

Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year a hundredfold (double): and the LORD blessed him.  And the man waxed great, and went  forward, and grew until he became very great: For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him
