Water Baptism

Why is it necessary?

Jesus told us to make Disciples and Baptize them

Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Jesus was Baptized by being immersed in water:

Matthew 3:16  As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

Philip baptized the Ethiopian by immersion too.
Acts 8:35-38 So Philip began at this place in the Scriptures and explained the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to a place where there was some water. The official said, “Look! Here is some water. Why can’t I be baptized?” As they were going along the road, they came to a place where there was some water. The official said, “Look! Here is some water. Why can’t I be baptized?” He ordered the chariot to stop. Then they both went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.

The Jewish People entered their Covenant by Circumcision

In Old Testament times a baby’s father would circumcise him and the child entered God’s Covenant

Genesis 17:9-14   And God said… This is my covenant… Every male child among you shall be circumcised… And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you… and My Covenant shall be in your flesh for an Everlasting Covenant.

Moses talked about something new God would do… He would circumcise their hearts

Deuteronomy 30:6  And the Lord thy God will Circumcise thy Heart… to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou may live.

WHY IS WATER BAPTISM IMPORTANT?

In Water Baptism we enter the New Covenant with God through Water Baptism

We identify with Jesus' in His Death

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

We identify with Jesus' in His Burial

Romans 6:3-4 Know ye not, that when we were baptized into Jesus Christ we were Baptized into His death? Therefore we are Buried with Him by Baptism into death:

Our sins are washed away in Baptism

Acts 22:16  And now why wait? Arise, and be Baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

We put on Christ in Water Baptism

Galatians 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

We are the children of God

Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

God, Our Father, circumcises us in Water Baptism!

Colossians 2:10-11 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. 11When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure but a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature.

We identify with Jesus' Resurrection

Colossians 2:12-13     For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.

God declares us to be His children when we have faith in Jesus and then, through Water Baptism we are crucified with Him, buried with Him, raised up with Him, we have our sins washed away and we put on Christ. That’s why Water Baptism is so important!
